Berat Old Town (UNESCO)
A UNESCO city full of history, stone houses, and culture.
Berat Castle dominates the city of Berat and is one of Albania’s most atmospheric historic sites. Unlike many European castles, this fortress still contains inhabited houses, churches and small guesthouses within its walls, giving visitors the feeling of walking through a living museum.
From the top, you can enjoy fantastic views over the Osum River valley and the white Ottoman houses of the Mangalem and Gorica quarters. Inside the castle you’ll find several churches with beautiful frescoes, the Onufri Iconography Museum and quiet cobblestone lanes ideal for slow exploration.
Berat Castle is part of the UNESCO-listed historic centre of Berat and is a must-visit for anyone travelling through central Albania.
